Jane Dodd (Dunedin (Nieuw-Zeeland), 9 september 1962) was en is onder meer actief als sieraadontwerper. Ook was ze actief als bibliothecaris en bassist in rockbands. Dodd woont en werkt in Ōtepoti Dunedin (Nieuw-Zeeland).
Biografie
Dodd is de jongste van vier kinderen van Jean en Jack (-2005) Dodd. Jack Dodd was werkzaam als fysicus en professor aan Otago University. Ze is hun enige dochter. Dodd is opgeleid aan University of Otago en speelde basgitaar in verschillende bands zoals The Chills, The Verlaines en Able Tasmans. Ook ontwierp Dodd grafisch materiaal voor de bands. Ze droeg bij aan de wat toen nog niet bekend was Dunedin sound. Later verhuisde Dodd naar Auckland (Nieuw-Zeeland).
Dodd verdiepte zich tijdens haar studie in antropologie, filosofie, religie en geschiedenis. Na een reis in 1989 naar Mexico legde Dodd zich toe op de vervaardiging van sieraden. Aanvankelijk startte Dodd als dertigjarige een studie keramiek aan Carrington Polytechnic (nu Unitec) te Auckland (Nieuw-Zeeland), maar al gauw kwam ze erachter dat de vervaardiging van sieraden voor haar aantrekkelijker was. Dodd goot sieraden in zilver waarmee ze in haar levensonderhoud kon voorzien.
Sieraden vervaardigt Dodd van materialen als ebbenhout, botten en parelmoer. Ze maakt gebruik van snijtechnieken. In haar sieraden verwerkt Dodd de impact van de mens op de natuur. Dodd werkt in projecten die ze titels geeft als Ends of the Earth, Seafaring, Wild Woods, Straw into Gold, Leuchterweibchen, Bloodsports en The Family. Dodd wil mensen bewust maken van hun suprematistische exploiterende houding.
In 2021 vond er een eerste overzichtstentoonstelling van Dodd plaats in The Dowse Art Museum te Lower Hutt (Nieuw-Zeeland). Bij de tentoonstelling is een monografie verschenen. Dodd merkte daarbij het volgende op: “I want to look at issues of extinction and infestation, cruelty and conflict: issues that arise at every branch of our Family Tree, affecting coral, ants, magpies, elephants” en “I want to challenge our ideas of animal intelligence, and exalt different sensory strengths and acumen. I want to berate us for thinking we are above or distinct from the natural world. I want us to feel that we are being watched and that stock is being taken. I want us not to get away with it.”
Martin Bergmans is Dodd’s levenspartner.
