Naum Slutzky (Kiev (Rusland), 28 februari 1894 – Stevenage (Verenigd Koninkrijk), 4 november 1965) was onder meer actief als sieraadontwerper, industrieel ontwerper, meubelontwerper, docent en goudsmid.
Biografie
Slutzky werd geboren in een familie die al generaties lang goudsmeden voortbracht. In 1905 week de familie vanuit Kiev (Rusland) uit naar Wenen (Oostenrijk).
Zijn opleiding genoot Slutzky bij de Wiener Werkstätte waar hij les kreeg van onder meer Josef Hoffmann en Edward Wimmer. Samen met onder anderen Johannes Itten gaf hij vanaf 1919 les aan Bauhaus in Weimar (Duitsland). Een tijd lang was hij het hoofd van de werkplaats van de afdeling goudsmeden.
Met Hedwig Arnheim (1894-1944) trouwde Slutzky in 1923. In 1924 verliet Slutzky Bauhaus, om als zelfstandige verder te gaan. In 1927 vestigde hij zich in Hamburg (Duitsland), waar hij bevriend raakte met Max Sauerlandt, directeur van het Kunstgewerbemuseum aldaar. Slutzky schonk het museum verschillende objecten van zijn hand. Later gaf hij ook werk aan Victoria and Albert Museum.
Eind twintiger jaren raakte Slutzky in financiële problemen. Sauerlandt ondersteunde hem. Vanwege zijn Joodse komaf en linkse voorkeuren vluchtte Slutzky voor de nazi’s uit Duitsland naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk in 1933. Hij ging er lesgeven, onder andere aan Royal College of Art in Londen (Verenigd Koninkrijk) en aan Dartington Hall School in Devon (Verenigd Koninkrijk). Breon O’Casey was een van zijn studenten.
Sieraden (naar ontwerp) van Slutzky ontstonden vanaf 1930 en waren geschikt voor industriële productie van betaalbare (onedele) materialen zoals chroom, messing, kunststof en glas. Materiaal was voor hem ondergeschikt aan de vorm. Daarnaast vervaardigde Slutzky ook unieke sieraden.
Slutzky stierf op het station van Stevenage (Verenigd Koninkrijk) in 1965 aan hartfalen.

You never replied to my email regarding the Koch Collection – but nevertheless I am contacting you again. I am flattered that you quoted the “Ring” book, but there are no rings (nor biography) in the Koch Collection. You failed however to include the monograph about Naum Slutzky written by Monica Rudolph, Meister am Bauhaus Goldschmied und Designer – where you will find a list of some important collections such as Hamburg. The ring in the Dallas Museum of Art is insignificant – I catalogued it, so I am well aware. It is such a pity that you often miss important monographs, this is not the first time I have flagged this up. It seems you try too hard to send texts out every day, as they say less is more. Thank you for your feed-back. Contrary to publications on paper websites are dynamic and can be adjusted easily. New information (texts as well as pictures) to articles is added every day. Whenever I have the chance to study the monograph about Slutzky of course I will add more details. My reasons to publish an article probably differ a bit from yours. My main drive is to offer a wide scaled free encyclopedia open to everyone, not a meticulous scientific annotated book or catalogue.
Your book is mentioned in this short biographical article about Slutzky, because you write about his (teaching) activities on page 25 and page 153.
I’m so sorry for not answering your email: I didn’t read any questions in it. It would be great though if you could still provide me with some more pictures of the Koch family and the original boxes of the collection.
