##Joyce J. Scott (Baltimore (Maryland, Verenigde Staten), 15 november 1948) was en is onder meer actief als sieraadontwerper, historicus, wever, beeldhouwer, performancekunstenaar, prentmaker, vocalist, activist en textielkunstenaar. Zij woont en werkt in een rijtjeshuis in Baltimore (Maryland, Verenigde Staten), een paar blokken verder dan waar ze als kind woonde.
Biografie
Kunstenaar Elizabeth Talford Scott (1916-2011) is Scotts moeder en haar eerste leermeester; van haar leerde ze quilten en ook kralen verwerken. De vader is Charlie Scott Jr. Haar ouders, afkomstig uit het Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten en aldaar werkzaam in de tabak- en katoenteelt en de landbouw trokken, net als circa 6 miljoen andere Afro-Amerikanen, van het landelijke Zuiden naar steden in het Noorden, op zoek naar betere toekomstperspectieven en beter onderwijs.
Scott studeerde als eerste in de familie aan The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore (Maryland, Verenigde Staten) (1966-1970). Ze was een van de slechts twaalf Afrikaans Amerikaanse studenten daar op dat moment. Voor haar ouders was een studie, ondanks hun ambities, niet weggelegd. Vervolgens zette Scott haar opleiding voort aan Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato (Mexico) (1970-1971). Scott wilde juist daar heen, om te ervaren hoe de oorspronkelijke bewoners op traditionele wijze objecten vervaardigden. Van daar uit maakte Scott reizen naar onder andere Guatemala, Panama en Peru. Later volgde zij lessen aan de Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle (Maine, Verenigde Staten) (1976), The New Theatre Institute Baltimore (Verenigde Staten) (1978) en het Rochester Institute of Technology in New York (New York State, Verenigde Staten) (1979).
Op Haystack maakte Scott kennis met Art Smith. Toen hij Scott aan het werk zag met een halssieraad van uiteenlopende materialen merkte hij op “I don’t know what you’re doing; don’t stop“. Een levenslange vriendschap was geboren. Ook op Haystack, in 1976, leerde Scott van een native American de peyote steek kennen.
In haar werk verwijst Scott naar slavernij, oorlog, (vrouwen)discriminatie, racisme, geweld, honger en straatcultuur. Het werk van Scott is multicultureel van karakter; zij is beïnvloed door zowel native American als Afrikaanse tradities.
In 1980 maakte Scott een serie sieraden als reactie op Jonestown massacre. In een Amerikaanse sekte, the Peoples Temple, gevestigd in een commune in Guyana en genoemd naar de leider Jim Jones (1931-1978), werden bij een collectieve zelfmoordactie (revolutionary suïcide) op 18 november 1978 ruim 900 mensen van het leven beroofd. De commune bestond voor een groot deel uit Amerikanen van Afrikaans Amerikaanse afkomst. De vier broches zijn aangekocht door Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa (Oklahoma, Verenigde Staten).
Gedurende haar carrière is Scott zich blijven ontwikkelen. Zo bezocht ze in 1992 Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood (Washington State, Verenigde Staten), de opleiding die in 1971 door onder anderen Dale Chihuly (1941) is opgericht. Ze werkte er samen met Dan Marioni. Ook verbleef ze verschillende keren op het glaseiland Murano, bij Venetië (Italië).
Scott past in haar sieraden onder anderen (geweven) textiel. leer, koraal, glas, objets trouvés en kralen van glas toe. Vaak gebruikt ze daarbij een techniek die overeenkomsten toont met de peyotesteek, afkomstig uit de cultuur van de Indianen. Ze maakt vooral halssieraden, maar soms ook oorsieraden en vaatwerk (vessels). Zelf beschrijft ze haar sieraden van kralen als een kruising tussen beeldhouwkunst en schilderkunst.
Met twee vrienden uit Baltimore (Maryland, Verenigde Staten) vormt Scott een acapella zanggroep: Thunder Thighs.
In de collectie van Helen Drutt bevindt zich een ring uit 2011 die Scott in samenwerking met Shana Kroiz en Lauren Schott heeft vervaardigd.
